We’ve reported recently that Liam Hemsworth is starring in a film based in Cut Bank, Montana. While not being filmed in Cut Bank, it’s still pretty cool to see one of Hollywood’s hottest actors representing Big Sky state in a big budget film.

The latest news is that the film has just released it's first trailer with scenes from the movie. Hemsworth plays a former high school athlete currently employed as a mechanic that dreams of courting a woman played by Teresa Palmer and moving to a larger city. However, even with his dreams intact, his actions stir up a violent string of events with deadly consequences.

The film synopsis is as follows:

DWAYNE MCLAREN (Liam Hemsworth, Hunger Games), a high school star athlete recently turned auto mechanic, dreams of getting out of tiny Cut Bank, MT – the coldest town in America – and whisking his pageant-hopeful girlfriend, CASSANDRA (Teresa Palmer), away to the big city. But his plan to do so sets in motion a deadly series of events and thrusts him into a police investigation headed by SHERIFF VOGEL (John Malkovich), the protector of Cut Bank and the closest thing Dwayne has to a father figure. Panic sweeps across the community in mere hours, but things are not what they seem. Cassandra’s father BIG STAN STEELEY (Billy Bob Thornton) is the only one who seems to realize this. However, the damage is already done and the events that unfold change Dwayne’s life – and the life of the town – forever.

Variety Magazine says about the film:

Watching an estimable quintet of character actors do their thing is the chief pleasure of “Cut Bank,” a largely routine thriller dressed up as a quirky small-town morality play. The feature helming debut of Matt Shakman, a former child actor turned prolific director of episodic television, does well by all but the youngest members of its core cast — a creative stumble that unfortunately leaves a gaping hole where the film’s heart should be. Quality supporting performances, including another excellent turn from Bruce Dern, aren’t enough to guarantee theatrical play after a Los Angeles Film Festival premiere, but should help boost the pic’s profile wherever it lands.

The Hollywood Reporter says:

Cut Bank is the sort of copycat, self-consciously comedic violent noir of which there were far too many at the Sundance Film Festival in the years after the Coen Brothers and Quentin Tarantino strode onto the scene. Clever enough to provoke a few abrupt laughs along the way, this big screen debut for two television stalwarts, director Matt Shakman (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and writerRobert Patino (Sons of Anarchy, Prime Suspect), is sabotaged by some frightfully on-the-nose expository dialogue and an adamantly prosaic visual style.

The film, arriving in 2014, is directed by Matt Shakman and stars John Malkovich and Billy Bob Thornton.
