Elaine Stritch, famed Broadway singer and actress, has died at the age of 89. The New York Times reports that Stritch’s passing was confirmed by a friend of hers, Julie Keys.

Stritch was living in Birmingham, Mich., at the time of her death. Before she moved to Michigan, however, she lived at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan for many years, where she performed a cabaret show from 2005 to 2013.

She made her Broadway debut in 1946 in the production of ‘Loco’ and subsequently went on to productions of ‘Sail Away’ and ‘Wonderful Town’ before appearing in ‘Company’ in 1970 before moving to London in 1972. When she returned to the United States after her husband’s death in 1982, she performed again on stage in a 1994 revival of ‘Show Boat.’

On television, Stritch was the original choice for two iconic roles — Trixie Norton in ‘The Honeymooners’ and Dorothy Zbornak in ‘The Golden Girls’ — but lost out to two other actresses. Her most recent major appearance was on ’30 Rock’ as Alec Baldwin’s mother.

As a film actress, Stritch appeared in notable films such as ‘Three Violent People,’ ‘A Farewell to Arms,’ ‘September’ and ‘Small Time Crooks.’

In 1995, Stritch was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
