John Carmack Resigns from id to Focus on Oculus

While the world was distracted by shiny new systems and the games that launched with them on Friday, id Software’s John Carmack resigned from the company he helped found.

According to Polygon, Carmack is abandoning id Software, known for its revolutionary properties like Doom and Quake, to put all of his efforts into his work with Oculus VR.

“John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio,” said Tim Willits, studio director at id Software in a statement. “John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.”

Earlier this year, Carmack was named chief technical officer of Oculus VR. At the time, Carmack maintained his role with id, but has since decided his duties with Oculus demand too much of his time to be split between the two companies.

We’ve reached out to Oculus for a statement, and will update when and if they respond.
