Lords of Shadow 2’s Developers Explain Modern, Open-World

MercuryStream’s newest developer diary tells us that Gabriel Belmont might need a little help adjusting to the modernized, open setting of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2.
In the video, Enric Alverez, a studio head for Mercury Stream, elaborates on the free-camera system of Lords of Shadow 2 and the open areas Dracula has to explore, which is quite different from the restricted, Devil May Cry-esque layout the first Lords of Shadow had.
Set in a modern city in Spain, Dracula’s castle is actually at the center of the town, indicating that the town has been built around the castle itself. There is a mix of the classic goth look of what Castlevania has become known for, along with the mechanized, industrial look of an urban, European city. MercuryStream used real, eastern European castles that are still standing along with the newer buildings of Manhattan as major influences in creating the architecture put into Lords of Shadow 2.
Small details, such as jumping across swinging chandeliers a la Super Castlevania IV, are included in Lords of Shadow 2 in order to appeal to the series’ longtime fans. Bringing something new to a decorated franchise is a big goal of MercuryStream. A big question Mercury wants us to focus on is how Dracula will react to a modern setting and what types of enemies will this new world throat at him.
Dracula will take on Satan one more time when Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 stakes its way onto Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on Feb. 25.
