We don't have a great selection of fruit at most grocery stores in Montana.  Usually your standard stuff like bananas, apples, grapes, etc.  Once time I found a starfruit. Otherwise it seems like a pineapple is about as exotic as we get. Kind of a trade off for living soooo far from a tropical climate. So, when I saw these giant "oranges" at my IGA store last week, they caught my attention.

Ok, so they are not oranges. They are a type of mandarin called dekopan and they were developed in Japan in the early 70's.  These were branded as Sumo Mandarins. They are a little pricey at $2.99 each. But they are AMAZING.  And HUGE. Above pic is a standard, slightly-larger-than a golf ball Cutie, next to the gigantic Sumo.  They peel super easily, just like a Cutie and they are seedless and extremely juicy and sweet.  If you see them in your favorite store, do yourself a favor and try these out.  I was saving one for this morning, but apparently the kid found it before me. Of course he did.

Next time,

Michael
