Popular Downtown Billings Intersection Closed 9/12 – 9/14

Skypoint, the iconic gathering hub in downtown Billings, is set to undergo extensive renovations after more than two decades of service. The comprehensive refurbishment encompasses a thorough cleaning, a fresh coat of paint, the integration of state-of-the-art LED lighting, as well as the removal and replacement of worn-out sails, according to a press release from the City of Billings. The repairs to the landmark will impact traffic downtown from Tuesday, September 12 to Thursday, September 14.

Originally named "Beaconing Rim"

The interesting structure generated mixed opinions from residents when it was first dedicated in 2002. Built from a design submitted by A&E Architects, the project was part of a commitment to revitalizing the downtown area, notes the Downtown Billings Alliance. When we stopped by the intersection today to snap some photos, it was fairly easy to discern the wear and tear on Skypoint's sails, a result of prolonged exposure to the elements—wind, rain, sun, and snow—over the years.

Commencing on Tuesday, September 12, and concluding on Thursday, September 14, the initial phase of the project will necessitate a temporary cessation of vehicular traffic at the intersection from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This will encompass the closure of 2nd Avenue North between North 27th Street and North 29th Street, as well as North Broadway Avenue between 1st Avenue North and 3rd Avenue North.

During this period, pedestrian traffic will remain permitted, facilitated by strategically placed barricades and caution tape, ensuring both guidance and safety.

Visitors are encouraged to utilize nearby streets and parking garages for convenient access to the businesses situated in the affected vicinity during the street closures. Specifically, City Hall's parking garage can be accessed via the adjacent alley or by entering 2nd Ave North from North 27th Street, with directional cones in place to facilitate smooth ingress and egress.

The September overhaul marks the initiation of a multi-phase endeavor set to unfold over the coming months. While precise dates for subsequent phases are pending confirmation, they are anticipated to transpire within the year. With the refresh, Skypoint should be looking shiny and new again for Harvest Fest, coming up on October 14th.
