Airbnb Restricts Some Younger Renters to Avoid House Parties

Airbnb announced Thursday that they reduce unauthorized parties at short-term rental properties.

According to Associated Press, their plan is to restrict guests under the age of 25 who do not have enough positive reviews from booking in their area from booking any rentals close to where they live.

“Reducing the number of unauthorized house parties on Airbnb has always been a priority, and it’s more important now than ever,” Airbnb said in their statement. “With public health mandates in place throughout the country, we’re taking actions to support safe and responsible travel in the United States.”

Any guest under the age of 25 can book an Airbnb outside of what the company states as their local area. Also, guests under 25 with at least three positive reviews, and no negative reviews can continue to rent.

All guests under 25 can continue to rent a single room or hotel room without any restrictions. Airbnb said that they implemented this restriction in Canada earlier and have seen a drop in unauthorized parties.

Last year, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky banned party houses and issued a 24/7 neighborhood support hotline for people to call with concerns and heal enforce the ban.

The company acknowledges the people over the age of 25 can also “book a home for the wrong reasons” as well, but with the success that was shown in Canada, they believe that this was the right action to take.

They state that most guests will treat a rental home like their own house and 99.95% rentals have no safety-related issues reported.
