UPDATE 3:56 PM 10/15

The Helena Independent Record is reporting that there was no bomb and nothing ever exploded. The device turned out to be a soda bottle filled with nuts and bolts that was left in the area by a homeless person with some mental issues who thought he was picking up litter.

Original Story

An improvised explosive device was detonated this morning at a Helena School. Multiple news sources, including Helena NBC affiliate KECI, are reporting that the device exploded this morning at Rossiter Elementary and no one was injured. It is not clear at this time if the IED went off by itself or if it was discharged by the bomb squad.

All Helena area schools are on lock down and are being searched by officers to ensure there are no other devices. The BATFE, FBI and Montana Highway Patrol are assisting Helena PD on the investigation.

This story will be updated as new information develops.
