Their full-length debut, Castaways and Cutouts, was released in 2002. It was followed by the acclaimed albums Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) and Picaresque (2005),

In 2011, the Decemberists topped the charts with The King Is Dead, which featured guest instrumentation from Peter Buck of R.E.M. (a big influence for the Decemberists). The album included the song "Down by the Water," which was nominated for Best Rock Performance at the 54th Grammy Awards.
