Havre Has It .. A Brothel, Chinese Laundry, Saloon and an Opium Den, All Underground

As many of you may or may not know, I'm from the Hi-line. The big town of Havre, MT. The crown jewel of the Hi-Line, population, just under 10K. I grew up on an 88-acre farm Southeast of town with my mom, dad, and 10 brothers and sisters. As a child and as an adult, I had always been told about Havre Beneath the Streets, but never went on the tour. This last weekend I went home to see my mom and help my brother and sisters do some work out on our farm. My brother had his sons, Liam and Langston, with him and they wanted to do the underground tour, so the boys, my daughter Bailey and her friend Makayla and I went on the tour. It was so cool. I can't believe I've never gone on the tour before.

Havre Beneath the Streets historical underground tour is a re-creation of Havre's history. When fire destroyed most of Havre in 1904, business owners moved underground to carry on their business until the town could be rebuilt. On the tour, you'll step back in time 100 years and see what would have been almost an entire city underground. From the Sporting Eagle Saloon, a turn-of-the-century honky tonk to the Holland & Bonine Mortuary (that still operates today above ground) to Gourley Brothers Bakery. You'll also see what was Wah Sing's Chinese Laundry an opium den (one of three known to have existed in the early days) a tack and blacksmith shop, ethnic restaurant, a dental office, Attorney Max Kuhr's office, Boone's Drug Store and a fountain Barber Shop and of course, a bordello (brothel).

Even though I grew up in Havre, I was shocked at how much I didn't know about Havre and its history.

If you ever make it up north, I highly recommend you take the tour.
