HELP! An Abandoned Well is Flooding My Yard

Ok, so I dabble in real estate as a side-hustle. I've been a licensed Realtor for about five years and I enjoy helping friends and family buy or sell their house. Realtors always tout the reasons why you should buy a house (myself included). But we sometimes neglect to share some of the downsides of home ownership. Of course there are property taxes, an expensive bill that comes due twice per year. And then there is upkeep and repairs like water heaters, A/C units, new roofs, etc. All not-so-glamorous or fun costs of home ownership.

Then there are issues like the one that literally popped up at my house this week and is causing me some serious headache. I have an abandoned sand point well in my backyard that was presumably used for lawn irrigation in the past. I've never been able to get water to pump out of the shallow well and I just assumed the well point had become clogged from decades of not being used. This is not entirely uncommon with these types of wells.

Earlier this week, I happened to glance in the backyard and noticed some large patches of ice/water puddles. "What in the hell?", I thought. We haven't had any snow or rain for months! Where is this water coming from? The next day the water puddle/ice spots had grown substantially. A day later and the water had now started to flood toward the front of my yard and had now covered my sidewalk with two inches of water. Thousands of gallons of water are taking over my lot. I dragged my redneck pump system out of the shed and began pumping the water to the street.

I wasn't finding any answers on the internet regarding my issue, which appeared to be water coming out of the old well, all by itself. I didn't even think this was possible. A phone call to a local irrigation company confirmed my suspicion that, yes, it is entirely possible. The tech recommend dumping a couple bags of bentonite down the well casing. It may - or may not - clog up the well and stop the water. So that's what I'll be doing this weekend.
