The SeniorList.com released a new study on expected doctor shortages by state using the latest data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The rankings were based on three factors: The current physician workforce in each state, the percentage of doctors nearing retirement age, and the proportion of medical residents nearing the end of their education.

According to the study, here’s how Montana ranked in each of the three categories:

  • Montana has 230.3 doctors per 100,000 people – ranking 36th
  • In Montana, 35% doctors are nearing retirement – ranking 48th
  • In Montana, 7.7 residents per 100,000 people are about to enter the workforce as doctors– ranking 48th

Montana is the #2 state in danger of a doctor shortage in the years to come with Wyoming listed at #1.

More than half of states fall below the recommended level to achieve balance between the number of physicians and the number of residents, meaning there are too few doctors for too many people in most of the United States. -TheSeniorList.com
